How To Keep Your Hair Extensions Looking Fabulous Year Round
Hair extensions are a quick and easy way to change up your look. With hair extensions, you can switch from a sleek, business-casual hairstyle, to a high-fashion red carpet updo in one salon visit!
Just like real hair, hair extensions need some routine care if you want them to stay shiny and healthy. Luckily, we've compiled a list of simple tips to help you keep your extensions looking great.
1) Don't Shampoo Too Often!
You only need to shampoo your hair extensions about once per week Make sure you use a sulfate free shampoo, scrubbing your head. A good shampoo does most of the cleaning work for you!
2) Don't Use Heavy, Oily Products
Thick, heavy products like hairsprays and pomades can take a toll on your hair. Plus, they make you have to shampoo more often which leads to more strand damage. If you must use a thick product, use as little as possible. Be sure to apply it away from the scalp and as close to the ends as you can. If your hair is prone to tangles, use a light detangling product to keep damage to a minimum.
3) Wet Your hair With Clean Water Before You Dive In
Just because you have amazing hair extensions, doesn't mean that you can't enjoy a swimming pool! Before you take a dip, wet your hair with clean water first. This makes your hair absorb less harmful chemicals from treated water, which reduces the damage to your locks. Repeat the process with more clean water after you're done swimming to remove the remaining chemicals.
4) Use The Proper Brushes.
Like hair products, not all brushes are designed for hair extensions. The wrong brush can snatch out your natural hair and the extension strands.
You'll should have two brushes, one for dry hair and one for wet hair. Always brush from the ends and work your way up. If you're unsure what brushes you should buy, you should ask our stylist.
5) Keep Your Hair Loose And Down Before You Go Swimming
Don't tie up your hair if you're going to get it wet. Hair gets heavy when saturated with water. Heavy hair weighs down on your scalp and strands, causing scalp irritation and extra breakage.
6) Rinse Your Scalp With Cool Water
The salt in sweat can cause scalp irritation and brittleness in hair strands. If you lead an active lifestyle, you should rinse your hair multiple times per week with cool water and no shampoo. You can also use a dry shampoo during the day to keep your hair fresh.
7) Use Proper Styling Products.
Not all products can be used with hair extensions. For example, any product that contains silicone, or adds a slippery quality to your hair should not be used. If you're curious about what you should use, ask our stylist!
8) Dry Your Hair Properly
We recommend that you blow dry your hair extensions. The keratin bonds of the strands swell when wet, and must be quickly and properly resealed to keep them from slipping off. If you want beachy waves, you can dry the area with the bonds and air dry just the ends.
9) Protect Your Hair From The Sun
You don't have to hide away from the sunshine, but a nice hat or headscarf can give your extensions the protection they need to last. You can also use hair products with specially designed sunscreen for hair. Just make sure they follow our product guidelines for hair extensions.
Luckily, maintaining hair extensions is easy. If there's anything you're still curious about, you should to speak to our professional stylist.
